On 31 July 2013, Edgbaston-based firm Tyndallwoods Solicitors became the latest Alternative Business Structure (ABS) to be authorised by the SRA. The new structure means that the firm can bring key non-lawyers into ownership and put its succession plans into effect.
Our input into the successful ABS application
We project-managed the ABS application from start to finish, which involved:
- assessing and putting in place compliance arrangements
- drafting the application documents
- gathering supporting information
- liaising with the SRA and answering their additional questions
- assisting with the practical aspects of a change in business structure
With our help the process ran smoothly and took less than five months.

Make sure you are using the right forms
The SRA has recently updated the ABS application process. In the old system, prospective applicants were required to submit a Stage 1 (expression of interest) pre-application before preparing the main forms within a 60-day time limit. In a bid to streamline the process, Stage 1 has been scrapped and the forms have been updated. If you have an old application pack, it is worth checking with the SRA Authorisation Team if they will still accept them. See the SRA website for more information.
